About Our Community

Our Community:
Blossom County High School is in a rural part of Mississippi, serving a small community of about 12,250 people. The area faces some tough economic challenges, with an unemployment rate of 12.9% and 14% of families living below the poverty line. The student body at the high school includes 1,089 students, with 30% identifying as non-white and 53% male. Although the elementary schools in the district have done well academically, with over 95% of students passing the Third Grade Reading Assessment, the high school struggles with a higher-than-average dropout rate of 16.3%. The school is also 22 miles away from the nearest larger town, which means many students have limited access to resources outside of school. Despite these challenges, the school plays a key role in the community, offering essential education and a place for students to access opportunities they might not otherwise have.
Our Role:
The library plays a crucial role in Blossom County High School and the surrounding community by providing students with access to resources they may not have at home, like books, computers, and research tools. In a rural area where access to technology and educational support can be limited, the library acts as a central hub for learning, offering a quiet place to study, help with research, and provides guidance on everything from homework to career planning. It also serves as a space for students to connect, collaborate, and explore new interests. We help students develop skills that go beyond the classroom and prepare them for future opportunities.
